Our Goal
Letterkenny Tidy Towns is a proud community group working to keep our town looking its best. Based here in the heart of Donegal, we’re made up of local volunteers who care deeply about where we live and who want to see Letterkenny thrive.
We work hand in hand with schools, residents, businesses, and the council to make our town cleaner, greener, and more welcoming for everyone. From picking litter and planting wildflowers to promoting biodiversity and sustainability, our aim is to protect and enhance the place we call home.
Over the years, Letterkenny has received national recognition in the Supervalu Tidy Towns competition but the real reward for us is seeing neighbours coming together and having pride in our place.
We believe everyone has a role to play. Whether you can spare an hour or get stuck in all year round, there’s always a way to help. It’s about more than tidy streets - it’s about community, connection, and leaving a better town behind for the next generation.
Together, we tidy, we grow, and we thrive.
Tidy Towns Competition
The SuperValu TidyTowns competition has been running since 1958 and is one of Ireland’s longest standing and most respected community initiatives. Towns and villages from all over the country - big and small - take part every year, with pride and a strong sense of place at the heart of it. Here in Donegal, we’ve always had a grá for keeping our communities looking their best, and the competition gives us a chance to showcase that.
Judging is based on several key categories including Community Involvement & Planning, Streetscape & Public Spaces, Green Spaces & Landscaping, Nature & Biodiversity, Sustainability, Tidiness & Litter Control, and the Built Environment. It’s not just about flowers and fresh paint - it’s about how well a community works together to care for its town, protect its heritage, and plan for the future. The judges visit during the summer months, often quietly and without notice, taking everything in as they walk the streets and green areas. It’s a great motivator for year-round effort and brings neighbours together with a common goal - to make our town the best it can be.
